ventured to raise my head and lookround, when, to my unspeakable joy, I perceivedthe lion had, by the eagerness with wliich he sprungat me, jumped forward, as I fell, into the crocodilesmouth, which, as before observed, was wide open :the head of the one stuck in the throat of the other,and they were struggling to extricate themselves.1 fortunately recollected my couteau de chasse,which was by my side; with this instrument Isevered the lions bead at one blow, and tbe bodyfell at my feet. I then with the but-end of myfowling-piece rammed the head further into thethroat of the crocodile, and destroyed him by suifo-cation, for he could neither gorge nor eject it. Soon after I had thus gained a complete victoryover my two powerful adversaries, my companionarrived in search of me; for finding I did not fol-low him into the wood, he returned, apprehendingI had lost my way, or met with some accident. After mutual congratulations, we measured thecrocodile, which was just forty feet in length.

The skin of the crocodile was stuffed in the usualmanner, and makes a capital article in their publicmuseum at Amsterdam, where the exhibitor relatesthe whole story to each spectator, with such addi-tions as he thinks proper: some of his variationsare rather extravagant; one of them is, that thelion jumped quite through the crocodile, and wasmaking his escape at the back-door, when, as soonas his head appeared.
